Raymond Luzier, drummer of the nu metal band Korn, becoming a full-time member of the band in April 2009. Ray Luzier’s kit is often changed slightly to fit the style of the artist he performs or records with. He currently endorses Pearl Drums, Sabian cymbals, Remo drumheads, DW hardware, Vic Firth drumsticks, and Factory Metal Percussion Cymbals. Despite the fact he endorses Pearl, he has been spotted playing ddrum and Orange County Drum and Percussion (OCDP), companies he had previously endorsed.
Luzier is well known for his work with David Lee Roth, whom he played drums for from 1997–2005. Luzier has also played with The Hideous Sun Demons, a progressive-rock/fusion trio formed with DLR bandmembers Toshi Hiketa (guitar) and James LoMenzo (bass). Luzier became the drummer for Steel Panther shortly after the band formed in 1997. He remained with Steel Panther for six years until he was let go by the band when Luzier refused to stop touring with David Lee Roth. In 2004, Luzier released an instructional DVD. It features a wide variety of lessons, including double-bass technique, drum fills, motion exercises, and warm-ups. It was released through Hal Leonard Publishing Co.
Ray Luzier grew up on a farm outside of Pittsburgh, PA, and started playing drums when he was only five years old. In 1989, he graduated from Musicians Institute, and he went on to teach here from 1992 until 2001. In the early ‘00s, Luzier got his first major breaks in the business by playing in David Lee Roth’s band. During that time, he also joined the band Steel Panther as a drummer. While playing with these bands, he also took part in the band, Army of Anyone, formed by members of Stone Temple Pilots.
In 2007, Ray joined Korn, a gig that would change his life. He became a permanent member of the band in 2009 and they have enjoyed immense success around the world. He has also released instructional DVDs, scoring the #2 spot in the 2006 Modern Drummer Magazine reader’s poll for “Best Instructional DVD”. His videos are successful for his talent and passion and background as an instructor at MI. He recently returned to MI to supervise the talent auditions here for Jonathan Davis’s solo tour.
